What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a psychotherapy approach that was developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. EMDR is primarily used to treat individuals who have experienced trauma, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Our EMDR-trained therapists specialize in the treatment of adults with complex trauma/ PTSD, substance use disorders, as well as various mood, personality, and behavioral disorders.
EMDR Offered at Resolutions Therapy Practice
The therapeutic process of EMDR involves recalling distressing memories while the therapist directs their attention to bilateral stimulation, typically in the form of side-to-side eye movements. This bilateral stimulation is believed to facilitate the processing of traumatic memories, helping to alleviate the emotional distress associated with them.
EMDR treatment consists of several phases, including history-taking, treatment planning, and reprocessing of traumatic memories. EMDR aims to help individuals reprocess traumatic memories so that they are no longer emotionally overwhelming and can be integrated more adaptively. It is important to note that EMDR should only be administered by a trained and licensed mental health professional.
