Solution-focused therapy (SFT) is a goal-oriented, brief therapeutic approach that focuses on identifying and working towards solutions rather than dwelling on problems and issues.
SFT concentrates on what clients want to achieve rather than analyzing the problems that led them to seek therapy. Therapists help to define goals and encourage clients to envision a future where these goals have been realized. Developed in the 1980s by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, SFT is rooted in the belief that individuals can create positive change in their lives, and the emphasis is on exploring and amplifying clients' strengths and resources.
This type of therapy is client-centered, with therapists adopting a collaborative and respectful approach designed as a short-term option. The goal is to bring about quick and effective change and let clients be experts in their own lives. Clients may be asked to rate their progress on a scale, and this provides a tangible way to measure and discuss improvements.
A common technique involves asking the "miracle question," which invites clients to envision a scenario where their problems have miraculously disappeared overnight. This helps clients articulate their desired outcomes and the steps needed to achieve them. By recognizing and building on these existing assets, clients are better equipped to overcome challenges.
